I surfed the internet and found an area of swans gathering to pass the winter. It's a river called Gongyo, not a lake or pond.
I came to the river on a Saturday this month. The width of the river is only 20 or 25m. As you see, the river is very shallow because all weirs for irrigation were put down after rice harvesting, in addition, rainfall in winter is very little.
A young one fluttering its wings looks comfortable.
"Unwearied still lover by lover.
They paddle in the cold
Companionable streams or climb the air;
Their hearts have not grown old;
Passion or conquest, wander where they will,
Attend upon them still."
W. B. Yeats
I know there are lots of small fishes in the river, but swans usually eat waterweed. This riverbed is gravel not mud. I am curious to know how they get foods here. After coming back home, I read the city website saying: the first swans came here 14 years ago, every year flocks of swans come to this river in the end of October and fly back in the end of March and 220 swans passed the last winter in this river.
睇見佢地當堂覺得冇咁涷 :P
ReplyDeleteMy neighbor used to raise swans. Did you know they mate for life? So sad to see one all by itself. Diana
ReplyDeleteHello rtc, It is a rare treat to see such a large flock of swans together. Usually, when we see them at all, there are only a few. It was well worth taking the effort to research and go to this site.

They are beautiful, but I have heard they can be vicious.
ReplyDeleteNice winter home!
ReplyDeleteDearest RTC,
ReplyDeleteIt remains a bit of a mystery not quite knowing how they feed for a period of five months...
All I know is that swans have only one partner during their lifetime so they must stay together and somehow make it through.
Hugs,
Mariette
How pretty they are!
ReplyDeleteWe have seen images where we see 2 swans joining their heads to form a heart, especially on wedding cakes.
This is because, they are a symbol of eternal love. Once mating has taken place, the white swan remains with its partner for life and is faithful to it. That is, they are monogamous, something not so common in the animal world.

I see some swans here and there but never so many together
ReplyDeleteSwans are so very beautiful. What a glorious sight this is!
ReplyDeleteSwans are so pretty and graceful! (due to some teen drama, I have a new blog: www.melltells.com)
ReplyDeleteSuch peaceful scenes with the swans, I particularly like the third image.
ReplyDeleteThank you too for the information.
Enjoy these last few days of January.
All the best Jan
How nice to see them all together!
ReplyDeleteI suppose they find enough to eat or they wouldn't stay in that river. How beautiful they are, and how fortunate you are to have them nearby!
ReplyDeleteBlessings!

ReplyDeleteLovely swans. I saw a pair in Alaska. There were a pr at Bauman farms when I worked there at harvest festival last fall. Thanks for sharing the photos and poem. I liked reading it. Have a good week!
ReplyDeleteSwans are such graceful birds. What lovely photos these are, and I especially like the one of just the two with the sun shining on the water. It's nice you got to spend some time here. It looks like a peaceful place to visit.

ReplyDeleteSwans are such a beautiful sight to behold.
ReplyDeleteLove the gorgeous photos.
Happy Thursday!
Beautiful birds, RTC. It's good that you have seen them in this river before swans leave in March. Love them!
ReplyDeleteThey are such beautiful, majestic birds.
ReplyDeleteI was just talking to my husband and wandering what the swans are eating this time of year. And we were both wondering if they visit rivers. So you have answered that question for us. We have seen them on backwaters of rivers, but never on the real river.
ReplyDelete恭喜發財, 新年快樂🧧
ReplyDeleteThey are so beautiful and it is nice that you were able to find them. It is interesting to wonder what they eat. Hope you have a lovely week.
ReplyDeleteswan is beautiful
ReplyDelete多謝分享天鵝嬉水的照片。
ReplyDeleteLove the photos. Swans are so beautiful. But I learned, while paddling a canoe on a river in Michigan (USA), that mother swans can be very aggressive and scary when they think you're getting too close to the babies!
