It is the coldest time of the year now. Every morning the temperature falls -5℃ (23°F) or lower. Wheat has grown its roots enough to withstand frost columns.
I seldom pay attention to the growth of wheat blades. When one month or longer time has passed, I can suddenly notice their remarkable growing. Farmers can harvest the crop in April.
Outer leaves of Chinese cabbages are bound with a string to prevent the freezing of the inside.
Long green onions are tough. They are indispensable for many traditional Japanese cuisines.
Though spinach cannot grow leaves upward because of the heavy coldness, it does not worry about frosting or snowing.
The leaves become shrunk by cold and get sweeter. I love spinach shallow-fried in butter.
Amazing how they all grow in winter!
ReplyDeleteReally interesting! Doesn’t those plants go to freeze when it’s cold?

ReplyDeleteMy regards from Argentina.
ReplyDeleteAs soon as it seems like spring might stick around, we plant lettuces and spinach and such. I might have to try green onions next year. They DO look hardy!
ReplyDeleteHello rtc, There are some plants that can even be harvested after brushing away the snow, although digging roots in the winter can be difficult. Many people have winter cellar gardens for forcing vegetables--with the extra protection from cold and snow, they can be very productive, as well as blanch many vegetables, making them pale and mild in flavor.

Dearest RTC,
ReplyDeleteWhile biking together with Pieter we also have been enjoying the growth of winter wheat in the fields.
It sure is amazing how many vegetables are resilient to frost.
As a child I remember that my Parents used to talk about certain vegetables that would taste better/sweeter after some frost.
Thans for your always excellent photos with worthwhile information.
Hugs,
Mariette
How wonderful to grow produce! This time of year here everything is frozen solid. You could not dig anything even if you wanted to do so. Happy New Year to you- Diana
ReplyDeleteSpinach is such a good foot to eat, but I seldom eat it. When Nel was a baby, she LOVED spinach and wanted more! Interesting to see the crops in cold temperatures like this. It's very cold here too, but not the single digits. Stay warm and take care.

Amazing how these vegetables can withstand the cold and still grow so beautifully and healthy. Our lowland weather is harsh on these vegetables so ours will be of small sizes.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, I love fresh vegetables, it is snowing here today so far 7 inch's of snow and cold.

Excellent photos and very interesting to see. Thank you for sharing them.
Ana
So interesting to see these crops in the cold.
ReplyDeleteHappy Monday!
ReplyDeleteInteresting to see...we have a winter wheat, but I am not where I can watch it close. I bet that is a chore to tie up those leaves on the cabbages.
