Hikawa Jinja Shrine 2 (calcareous breccia)

To the west just 50 meters from the main building of this shrine, there still remains a small pond called "Snake Pond", though it looks artificial now. Your are prohibited to go into the water. In ancient days, there were lots of swamps in this area. People might perform seasonal rituals praying for  good fishing here.
Green leopard plants open vivid yellow flowers under the winter sunshine.

You may have seen this straw mat bound on a pine tree. Insects dislike coldness and come under it during the winter. If not, they will make a hole and damage the tree.
Gardeners will take off this before the coming spring.
This is another stage for ritual dancing.
A lion sculpture on a pole looks humorous.
STONES GATHER ROUND AND BECOME A BIG ROCK AFTER SPENDING LONG TIME ?
Rains become calcic water through small lime stones and the water can glue stones together. The long repetition of this process makes a big rock. Ancient people believed small stones came together and changed into a rock.

I wish you a Happy New Year !

  1. Hello rtc, Another charming temple with so many vivid points of interest. Water indeed has a huge influence on geology, a science that I have wanted to study in more detail.

    祝你新年快樂﹗

  3. Dearest RTC.,
Interesting site of Hikawa Jinja Shrine and a scary Snake Pond...
Love the healthy yellow flowers with their fat leaves on the Farfugium Japonicum!
How clever for dressing the tree trunks with such a straw skirt for harboring insects during winter and thus avoiding damage to the tree's bark!
The stage under the lovely roof style looks great. We had lots of these pagoda type roof styles in Java, Indonesia where we lived and worked.
Indeed the lion sculpture makes one think about the artists 'many' thoughts...
Ancient people did not have a lot of scientific explanations for certain forms that appeared in nature. The nitrogen in rainwater indeed can glue the tiny rocks together and make them into sedimentary rocks over the ages. Mother Nature has always been very patient!
But it still is wonderful that we can look at those rather ancient things and wonders of nature...
Wishing you a quiet and peaceful transition from 2019 into 2020 in good health; our biggest asset in life!
    Hugs,
    Mariette

  4. That's interesting about the small stones forming into rocks - but it makes sense, doesn't it? The yellow flowers are dainty and lovely. I've always loved ponds, rivers, streams, and brooks. There's something about the calming waters, so peaceful.

Wishing you much goodness in the new year. : )

Eu mesma, por estes dias, estou a recuperar de uma grande gripe... até as constipações e gripes banais, cada vez estão mais agressivas...
