Hikawa Jinja Shrine

This shrine is located near Tokyo. The approach is quite long and tall big trees are planted on the both sides
The main gate is painted red, a divine color.

This building is the hall of worship. People clap their hands twice and pray their happiness.
This building is called "kagura den" where sacred music and dancing are dedicated. The day I visit was the gala day for boys of three and five and girls of three and seven. Parents pray their children's health and happiness.
All sides are decorated with three patterns, three swirls, a circle and U shaped one. They might have important meanings.
Hikawa Jinja has many small shrines. I love this simplicity.
You will see many giant trees in the precincts of shrines in this country. I love this atmosphere.

  3. Hello rtw, How appropriate that the shrines celebrate both small children and large trees. I am sure that the beautiful locale of these ceremonies makes a deep impression on the young ones--they are the ones who will have to maintain the traditions, the shrines and the ecology in the future.

  4. Dearest RTCl,
One only can love Japan for its serene places where temples and shrines are located. Tall trees complete that special feeling as they reach up to the heavens.
We were so impressed by the oldest and most popular Sensoji temple in Tokyo. That was on July 7, 2007.
Sending you hugs and thanks for sharing always such touching and impressive photos.

  23. When I was in Japan, I found temples to be a refuge among the busy city streets. They always feel harmonious, no matter how many people are there.
