The general shape is comma. But the upper two are not general. This type is called "magatama with its children". This black big one has 6 C-shaped small magatama, one on the left side, three on the right and two on the top. Though it has been said this special type is a symbol of fecundity, the exact meaning has not been discovered yet. These two are not old, made in A.D. 6 centuries.
How interesting.

Its unique form and clustered magatama evoke a sense of mystery and symbolic depth, hinting at meanings lost to time yet still resonant with cultural significance
ReplyDeleteHow good it is not to forget the things of our past! Magatama is an ancient jewel, a symbol full of history and meaning that endures to this day, manifesting itself in the art, religion, and national identity of Japan.
ReplyDeleteHello RTC, Thank you for showing us these magatama. I just read the article in Wikipedia, which illuminates their history and uses, although apparently their earliest forms and uses are lost in pre-history. Apparently the holes were for stringing, and the article shows an example of an excavated magatama necklace.
